Philpott on apologizing for Hiroshima
Here is my friend and Notre Dame colleague, Dan Philpott, arguing that President Obama should have been willing to apologize for the nuclear attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki because those attacks involved the intentional killings of innocent civilians and were, therefore, morally wrong (notwithstanding the possibility that they saved lives by shortening the war in the Pacific). (I take it that identifying the civilian victims of the bombings as innocent does not conflict with also identifying as grossly immoral the militarist and nationalist policies of pre-1945 Japan and the gruesome war crimes atrocities committed against, e.g., Chinese civilians and Allied P.O.W.s).
