The Vice-President "fully understand[s]" China's one-child policy

Speaking at Sichuan University, in Chengdu, China, the Vice President of the United States said this:

You have no safety net.  Your policy has been one which I fully understand -- I’m not second-guessing -- of one child per family.  The result being that you’re in a position where one wage earner will be taking care of four retired people.  Not sustainable.

Groan.

You are justified in groaning, but any number of times I have been in arguments with political/religious conservatives who imply that baby boomers and later generations should have had more children (and not resorted to contraception or abortion) so that there would be more people contributing to social security.

EXAMPLE FROM AN OLD THREAD ON dotCOMMONWEAL: "It is to me curious that so little is said about the immorality of birth prevention, about its obvious intention to sidestep the blessing mentioned in Genesis. I read today that there will be a great problem as the Baby Boomers come to claim Social Security benefits and Medicare. It seems that they have not taken care to provide enough workers in the next generation to pay for the benefits. The Lord is not mocked."
