I saw someone on one of the Sunday morning political shows saying that the Republicans want smaller government without paying for it, and the Democrats want larger government without paying for it. He said neither one was being honest with the American people about the costs that lie ahead with their respective approaches.

This is so simple it doesn't need to be said (and perhaps so simplistic it shouldn't be hoped for), but if the two parties would present their visions for the future honestly, Americans would make a choice—would *have* to make a choice—between smaller government, with less government services, less of a safety net, and so on, or larger government, with more government services, a more generous safety net, and so on. And Americans could choose what they want AND WHAT THEY ARE WILLING TO PAY FOR. It seems to me putting the cart before the horse to try to decide what percentage of GDP taxation should be, and then figure out what to cut. Instead, the goal should be to figure out what people want AND are willing to pay for from government. If that means higher taxes, then what's the problem?
