A new tactic in the abortion debate?

Having someone run for office in order to get a graphic anti-abortion ad on the air has sparked some controversy.  (My own view is that, provided that the ads are run at times when children are not likely to be watching, they are a legitimate contribution to the public conversation.)

I agree that they are a legitimate contribution to the public conversation. If there had been television in the 1850's, would it have been too graphic to have run anti-slavery ads depicting slaves chained, manacled, flogged, or otherwise degraded? I don't think so.

Still, there would likely be backlash against a graphic anti-abortion ad such that the benefit of running the ad would first have to be weighed against the detriment. There have been many testimonies from women who decided against abortion after viewing sonograms of the developing fetuses. Perhaps a more effective ad would be one emphasizing that technology is revealing more and more clearly that what is in the womb from very early on in a pregnancy is both morally and legally entitled to protection.
